Happy Valentine's Day

Last weekend, after Melissa's post about kids' Valentine ideas, Ellie and I made these for her grandparents and a few special friends. While she was a great sport about letting me trace her wee hand ("Again! Again!"), things went slightly south when she was helping me glue the hands down onto watercolor paper.

After very nicely asking to hold one of the pink construction paper hands, she slunk off to her room, undetected, and, ahem, ate a hand. Not the whole hand. Like, two and a half fingers and some palm. Niiiiiice.

So, to summarize, these were easy, fun, inexpensive, and a huge hit with the grandparents and aunties. And also delicious, if you're into that kind of thing.

I think modern Valentine's Day symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards
