For the Looky-Lous

Some of you are concerned that no photographic evidence of me exists. Aren't you funny. Just so we're clear:

There. That should be enough for the entirety of 2008, at least. There are several good reasons for the relative absence of self-portraits on this here blog, and they are (in no particular order):

1. I'm usually the one with the camera.

2. I'm not a huge fan of posing for photographs. It ranks somewhere between "being itchy" and "dental cleaning."

3. I generally assume that people have little to no interest in looking at a bunch of pictures of me when there's plenty of babies and soup and Roombas around.

4. I am reluctant to post pictures of myself because it makes me feel even more conflicted about the whole blog thing. I mean, I like looking at other people's pictures (hypocrite!), but adding pictures of myself, on my personal blog, where I talk about my personal life, seems like I would be taking the narcissism to next level. Or something. As I've explained before, I haven't totally worked out my feelings about me and the blog (perhaps my embarrassment stems from my deep hatred of the word "blog" itself?) but I'm hoping for increased clarity.

Barring clarity, I need to make some t-shirts that say, "I Feel Weird About My Blog." Or maybe "Please Don't Ask Me About My Blog" in tiny, minuscule type.

You are so beautiful! I love these. Besides, parents glow around their babies. That has to be documented!

Yeah, yeah...conflicted, narcissistic...blah, blah...can we get back to commenting on the PICTURES now?

Those pictures are gorgeous. You are all beautiful!! My favourite is actually the last one...look at your little girl. She is ready to eat you up. Lovely!

Have a GREAT weekend.

Heidi :)

I agree about the gorgeousness -- but if you want to hide you go ahead and hide. This reader won't complain as long as you keep taking pictures. Of really anything! Even your dinner pics are beautiful... And, of course, plz keep writing....

So the other day, I was watching MSNBC with my 96 year old grandmother, and, in response to one of those "the bloggers are buzzing" pieces, she asked me what a "flog" was. I explained it was a "blog," and it's a website that is updated continually, etc. etc.
Then she goes, "Well, I just don't think a flog sounds like a very pleasant thing."

So you're not the only one who feels funny about blogs. So does my grandmother.

I love that you posted pictures of yourself! There is nothing narcissistic about it and you ARE lovely!

I drink pictures of my favorite bloggers up greedily and with relish (um, but not in a weird way or anything.) Because now I can put a face to the awesome writing.

See, now you've raised the bar. We're going to need some video next time. With singing and dancing for good measure.

I, too, am an anti-photographable being. I prefer to be anonymous and tend to avoid posing. Photogenic? Not I.

grrrr I have had it with Blogger. Two hours to load comments (yes I'm on broadband), those freakin word verifications that are practically a whole alphabet long, and then it decided's to lose my comment.

Oh, sorry.

Babe, you are freakin gorgeous! You look like one of those 50's movie stars. You didn't even have to use ridiculous amounts of contrast like moi, your naturally beautiful :)
And how did you manange to clone yourself so well?
Mums need to be *all about me* more often, or we lose our grip on sanity. xxxx
I actually like the carosel(sp?) one, I have a similar one of me and Denver.

Oh you narcissistic little dancing bee

Oh how I admire and love thee.

To blog is to be a narcissist to some level. I'm good with that.

Just embrace it, baby. You're a way pretty lady.

This past year has been my year of pictures - there are hardly any of me when the kids were young.

And I don't really like it.

But now I'm getting older and I imagine that my kids might wonder what the heck I looked like. So, in my flickr there are so scary shots.

Oh well.

So please embrace your narcissism and please post more. You are ever so lovely.

Narcissism, schmarcissism. You look fabulous! And I love that the baby has a hold of your ear in that one pic!

You are lovely, of course. But I get what you mean, I think (make an extra t-shirt for me). I sort of like being behind the camera too, that way readers can make me into whoever they want when they read. It adds to the fantasy book-like quality of blogging, I think.

Like that movie with John Travolta as the angel? And everyone around him smells their favorite thing? Cookies baking and such? Like that.

But yes, the bubbas and the soups, must have pics....

Ditto on all the remarks about your beauty, and you children. I felt uncomfortable at first, about blogging, then I realized "oh, there are so many bloggers on here, I will probably never be read". And then I felt better. But now I find myself looking for comments,(I get few). So, I guess I am as narcissistic as the next gal/guy.
Keep at it, you are wonderful!

Well we can see where your daughter got those gorgeous eyes of hers! (From you!)
I, too, hate pics of myself. They just don't match my mental image of myself, so I try to pretend pictures don't exist. I hate the name "blog" (so ugly) and I'd like one of those t-shirts too. I recently posted a pic of myself for the 1st time on my blog , which has been going for nearly 2 years now, and everyone said, "Hm. You look so different from how I've been imagining you!" Sigh...
I think we should all rename it flog, like K's grandmother.

Can I just say

Every single word of what you wrote.

Exactly what you said.

No pictures of me on mine for identical reasons.

I'd like one of those t-shirts!

I'd like one of those tshirts, too!
I've never posted pics of myself either.

Great pictures!!

I'll trade you your beautiful red hair and enormous bazongas for my flat chest and fine, limp, mousy brown hair, mmkay? No?

I hope you go to BlogHer so we can go out drinking and commiserate about what tortured bloggers we are. : )

It's so wonderful to see pictures of you, and you are lovely and so sweet with your children!

I agree with family adventure - I love the last picture - how your beautiful baby is just eating you up. I can just feel that little mouth on my cheek. There are no words...

(That's why there are pictures!:)

Finally! Just as beautiful as your writing!

Hello, hotstuff.

I would buy that "I feel weird about my blog" tshirt. And I mean that.

There is one photo of my hair on my blog. That's it.

My blog is where I'm out there for all the world to read while I'm still hiding in the garbage can, Oscar-like.

Claire B. said...

PS You're freakin' gorgeous, as are your babies.

Minnesota Matron said...

Yes . . . I've been mulling over the blog thing under a Blethic thread on my blog -- blog and ethic, combined. And I love seeing photos, especially yours. That said, I only have a couple of me on mine and they were partial shots. There is a mystique to the matron, after all.

Cheri said...

I only very recently put any pictures of me on my blog and flickr sites. I have all the same reasons you do. I totally get you. I don't really know why I finally did it either, I guess I just felt it was more honest, time to come out of hiding. I love seeing the faces behind the great writing of the blogs I read, so why was I hiding mine? You've named all the reasons I had.

P.S. You are absolutely beautiful. It is nice to see you.
